Networking
Networking is a common synonym for developing and maintaining contacts and personal connections with a variety of people who might be helpful to you and your career.
You can’t start soon enough or do too much networking. You’re planning your future, after all, so take charge! Begin by listing all the people to whom you can talk to. Not only those who may have the job you want. Anyone and everyone can spread the word that you are or will be searching for a new position. Whether it’s passing along your resume, providing a referral or simply keeping you in mind should an opportunity arise to mention your name, there’s something for everyone to do! As soon as you know you’ll be looking, draft your list. Begin with the names of friends and family. To that, add current work contacts, previous employers, co-workers, fellow alumni, and so on. Always carry index cards for jotting down names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of those who are willing to offer assistance-you never know whom you’ll meet so be prepared. Print up “business cards” to distribute at opportune moments; these should provide your name, e-mail address, address, and phone number(s) along with a very brief description of the type of position you seek. Seize every opportunity to network-including holidays, conventions, weddings, and reunions when you’re likely to encounter people you don’t see regularly.

Working for Six Months
As a career counselor, career guidance professional, and HR professional who has hired or placed 1,300+ professionals, I continue to see “trends.”
First, don’t be discouraged about being out of work. As mentioned, if there is 15% or 9% unemployment, that means there is 85% or 91% employment.
As a staffing professional in technology and constantly in the technical marketplace, I want to make a few suggestions to assist people in the “six months and not employed.”
First and foremost, nothing stands out more on a resume showing professionals that were downsized and have not found a new position.
For example,
ABC Bank, Any-town, OH Jun 2000 – July 2011
Lead Developer
Okay, you list your strengths and what you can do for a potential client (remember to view web-sites and career sections to see “what-company-is-looking-to-hire”) and if you match the job, educational, and other requirements, and you get the correct contact name in Human Resources, or you find a contact within the company to hand-deliver your resume and cover note, then you are ready to send a resume to the company.
Sports Jobs Tips
1. Intern for local sports teams or volunteer at sporting events. These are great resume builders and a perfect opportunity to network.
2. Attend sports career fairs, panels, networking events, etc. People you will want to know will be there. You have a great opportunity to introduce yourself to them and give them your resume or business card. You can also gain great tips, and meet new people.
3. Know your competition. As previously stated, attending sports events such as career fairs, panels, and networking events. While you’re getting to know the sports professionals, get to know those who are in direct competition with you. Find out where they work or intern. By holding conversations with them you can learn new things and make a great connection.
4. Freelance. If you’ve been applying for internships and jobs and haven’t received an interview, you should take this as a hint that you need more experience. Find freelance opportunities outside of sports that are relevant to what you want to do. For instance, if you want to work in sports sponsorship, conduct sponsorship for a local event that someone is holding. It never hurts to ask – people are always looking for sponsors and if you tell them it’s for a resume builder they may consider.
Working At Home
Nowadays, working from home is a possibility due to the exponential rise of the Internet. There’s no shortage of good business opportunities out there, however, there is a lot of work that goes into making money online.
Some people want to work from home. There is no other option for the mom of a newborn than to spend time with her kid. The liberty of working from home is thus very important to her because she can work as well as take care of her kid at the same time. For other people, it is a matter of convenience as they prefer to work on their time, without being accountable to a boss.
If there were any geographical boundaries, let me assure you that they don’t exist today. You can set your own hours, work for any company that you want, and can work from anywhere. Countries, regions, etc aren’t limiting you. You have a lot of freedom, of course, but at the same time since you’re working for someone, you have to be very responsible and accountable to your work. There is no doubt that there are problems down the road however, they are nothing to fret over.
Internet Job Search
A job seeker can now search for jobs without ever leaving the house, but they have a better chance online? Yes, anyone can now submit a resume, but the field is full because of it. In a labor market good time to get a lot of resumes. But in a bad labor market on the Internet by multiplying the CV they receive, it was too overwhelming.
Put yourself to get into the shoes and you’ll quickly see how many will drain their time sorting the candidates for years. Because their time is precious, suddenly their goal to eliminate as many people as possible. Think of it as American Idol auditions. Not that the participants actually for the show, but people are waiting in a line a mile long for hours.
Instead of a man, the porter new scanning technology. It forces you to evaluate your new resume and make it even easier to use keywords to prevent ejected before you give yourself a chance. No group of judges or call friends to vote for you. Only an insensitive robot is waiting for you at the other end of the drop of a hat. The resume should be the same keywords in the ad for the position you listed apply. Make sure all of these keywords as possible. It also contains a summary at the beginning of your CV.
Job Seeking Maze
If I had a title for what I do, I guess I would call myself a “Job Seeking Coach Who Blows Her Whistle a Lot.” As more and more people come to me for help, and most recently my own daughter who, upon graduation from college, has found herself amongst the herd of the unemployed, I am happy to assist as I can. When faced with being unemployed, or so miserable at a job to the point that it affects health, mood and outlook on life, people go through a gamut of emotions. First, they are scared, then frustrated not knowing where to begin to take control, then comes helplessness and some even give up hope altogether and just sway with the wind.
Enter me. I imagine myself running onto the field, clipboard in hand, whistle around my neck, marking plays in our job hunting play book. I begin by revamping the resume to a format which best fits the type of job sought from entry level to professional (entry level resumes should always be one page, and professional resumes can be two.) If I do not know the job-seeker personally, I gleam from the resume those things that jump out at me as being their strongest attributes and begin building. I create an email address that is totally professional, managed only by me, and used for the sole purpose of job hunting. I create a professionally written LinkedIn profile (or edit their existing one), making compelling points about ability, background, experience and skills, which is easy for me to do being an objective party.
Avoiding Job Hunting Mistakes
The job search is a difficult and stressful for everyone. No wonder so many people approach the job search wrong and end up with an unpleasant job or no job at all. To avoid common mistakes in the search for important jobs.
Wait for something good happens. It is not uncommon to work just lay in the lap of a person, it is certainly not the norm. Successful people make their own opportunities. A related mistake is to friends, family and other contacts you can find out a job. While you are in any case, you should seek your own personal network of contacts in each job, expect that someone else do all the work for you everywhere. Be proactive and do you find your own job.
The demand for too few jobs. Especially in today’s economy, most applications will not lead to an interview, and do not most of the interviews in a successful hire. As the saying goes, do not put all your eggs in one basket. Those who work only overwritten if the application does not run in the offer. After many chances as possible increases the chance that you work and away the biggest part of the sting of rejection.
